association between local illumination and visual fatigue among the r&d staffs of an automotive industry in iran

aims: the performance of the vision system as the most important sense of the body depends largely on the optimum lighting of an environment. it is one of the factors that lead to vision problems such as visual fatigue of employees. this study aimed to assess the local lighting and visual fatigue among the official staff of an automotive industry development and research center which was conducted in spring, 2015. materials & methods: in this cross-sectional study, 126 employees of research and innovation center of an automotive industry were selected randomly. for measuring the local brightness, based on the standard method, the lux meter hagner ec1 on the surface desk was used and 504 stations were assessed. the visual fatigue questionnaire was used for study their eye fatigue. data were analyzed, using spss version 20, through descriptive statistics in the forms of tables and graphs. findings: according to the results, the brightness of 75.8% of measured local stations was in the lower than standard condition. eye fatigue results showed that the average score was 3.5±1.97 as well as 40.4% 28.6%, 28.6% of employees had severe, average and low level eye fatigue respectively. conclusions: since an inappropriate local brightness can increase the incidence or prevalence of an adverse topical ocular fatigue in people, so, technical engineering measures including a designation of an internal artificial lighting system for workstations can improve the vision and reduce visual fatigue among their staff. finally, it leads to increase the productivity of organization.
